Newly Appointed Honorary Professors
The Department is pleased to announce that Professor Graciela Chichilnisky has accepted the position of as a Sir Louis Matheson Distinguished Visiting Professor and Professor Henry Ergas has been appointed as Honorary Professor.
On July 10, 2008 there will be an academic workshop on the "Chinese in Prato" jointly sponsored by the Asian Business and Economics Research Unit and the Centre for Community Networking Research. The workshop will be at the Monash Caulfield Campus.
The Department of Economics invites you to a public lecture by Professor Richard Portes, Professor of Economics at London Business School, Founder and President of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), Directeur d'Etudes at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Secretary-General of the Royal Economic Society and Senior Editor and Co-Chairman of the Board of Economic Policy.
Students undertaking Honours, Masters and DBA/PhD programs in International business and Asian Economics and related fields (international management and international marketing) are invited to join other HDR students and their supervisors at a research workshop. Students working on International business relating to Asia are particularly encouraged to present.

An Invitation to the Behavioural Economics Workshop, 2-3 June
Behavioural economics is making inroads into many fields in economics, and is also having an impact on legal theory and psychology. Experimental economics has come of age and is now well-established in the toolkit of many economists. The workshop is intended to provide a forum for discussion for academics, policy makers, and students who are interested in behavioural and experimental economics. Beyond fostering a network for researchers and policy makers in these areas, the workshop intends to encourage and support PhD. students to undertake research in these fields. The Department of Economics invites you to a public lecture by Professor Alan Auerbach, Director of the Robert D. Burch Center for Tax Policy and Public Finance at the University of California, Berkeley. Professor Auerbach's current research interests include corporate taxation, population aging and fiscal imbalances, and the effects of tax cuts during the G. W. Bush presidency. This conference will be hosted jointly by the Asian Business and Economics Research Unit (ABERU) and the Department of Economics at Monash University. It will provide a forum for debate on the relationship between financial development and economic growth. The conference will contribute to the growing pool of research in this area, exploring inter-related issues such as the role of institutions, financial liberalization, trade openness, capital flows, and banking efficiency. Kenneth J. Arrow, professor emeritus of economics and operations research was honored as recipient of the 2004 National Medal of Science, presented February 13 at the White House by President Bush.
