Experience 'STAR'dom

The Department of Accounting and Finance developed the Treasury Dealing Room (TDR) to provide students with the opportunity to apply theoretical finance and accounting concepts learned in the classroom with "hands on" application in active financial decision-making. The disciplines of corporate finance, investment and portfolio management, accounting information systems and treasury management are all dynamically applied within this facility.  The new postgraduate Carbon trading unit that will be taught from 2010 will also be taught in this facility.

With the diversification of units now taught in the TDR and the high quality learning and research that it facilitates, it was appropriate for us to consider a more representative name, one which covered what the learning experiences were all about.

The facility provides an interactive learning experience, using industry standard equipment, software and technology for simulated dealing and information management systems, reproducing activities undertaken in Australian financial institutions and corporations -producing real experience. This real experience is gained from undertaking one of the accounting and finance units taught in the room as part of an undergraduate or postgraduate course.

Simulated Teaching And Research is what it's all about, that's why the Treasury Dealing Room will now be known as the

Accounting and Finance STAR Laboratory

2010 will see the opening of a second STAR Lab on the Caulfield campus located on the ground floor of Building H. This new STAR Lab will provide more students with the opportunity of an integrated education and research experience utilising the technologies available. The two STAR Labs will be linked and it will be possible to communicate and conduct classes between the two.
