Malaysia Banking and Finance Unit

Monash University Malaysia Banking and Finance Unit was established in January 2001. In line with the School of Business and Information Technology's (SBIT) Research and Development plan and Monash University Malaysia's (MUM) Research and Development plan, the Banking and Finance Unit was established to achieve the following objectives:

  • To serve as a vital infrastructure to undertake a wide range of projects that are relevant to the banking and finance community in Malaysia and the region.
  • Focus and enhance research and development activities in banking and finance at Monash University Malaysia, through dissemination of knowledge vis-à-vis publication of research activities.
  • Provide mentorship for junior researchers at Monash University Malaysia.
  • Attract high calibre researchers and higher degree research students in the field of banking and finance to Monash University Malaysia.
  • Establish strategic linkage with industry and the banking and finance community in the country and region through collaborative and contracted projects, sponsorships and partnerships.

The Unit will also provide an important framework for focused research in the field of banking and finance, and provide leadership and direction for the banking and finance community in Malaysia and the region. With the setting up of a Banking and Finance Unit, it is envisaged that academic research in the field will be enhanced, and strategic linkages with the industry and the community strengthened.

Furthermore, rapid changes in the banking and financial sector in Malaysia and the region provides an excellent environment for research. The Malaysian Government's implementation of the Multimedia Super Corridor and the thrust towards electronic banking provides a fertile ground for research activities and research funding from local sources for the Unit. Such developments will provide an avenue for researchers to undertake contract research and advisory services. With an established reputation in the field of banking and finance, Monash University Malaysia has the potential of attracting high calibre higher degree students, government and industry-sponsored scholarships and fellowships in banking and finance.
