Melbourne Centre for Financial Studies (MCFS)

The Melbourne Centre for Financial Studies (MCFS) is a consortium that have joined together to enhance Melbourne’s national and international reputation for excellence in financial practice, research and education. The MCFS facilitates knowledge transfer and builds research synergies between industry and academe by undertaking finance research, arranging consulting by academics, and organising research focused conferences, workshops, public lectures and other educational activities.

History

During 2004, Monash University, together with the University of Melbourne and RMIT submitted a consortium-based application to the Victorian State government to create the Melbourne Centre for Financial Studies (MCFS). Later that same year the State government announced that the bid was successful. The Institute of Banking and Finance, now known as FINSIA, joined as a founding industry partner and the MCFS began to operate in July 2005 with initial funding from the Victorian Government and the consortium partners. AAMI, the Melbourne-headquartered national insurance company, has been corporate sponsor of MCFS since 2006.

Mission

To build linkages between academics, practitioners and government to enhance finance research, practice and education and the reputation of Melbourne's financial institutions and universities and of Melbourne as a financial centre.

Vision

To be recognised by industry, academia and government as the pre-eminent Australian organisation facilitating knowledge creation, knowledge transfer and thought leadership within the financial sector, and able to attract industry funding to support those activities.

Governance

MCFS is governed by a Board appointed by its contributing members. The Director reports directly to the MCFS Board, which is ultimately responsible for the governance and performance of the MCFS. The Board comprises one representative from each of the founding members. Additional appointments to the Board have been made to represent new sponsoring members.

Dr Keryn Chalmers, Professor in Accounting and Head of the Department of Accounting and Finance, is the Monash University, Faculty of Business and Economics representative, on the Board of the MCFS.

The MCFS is establishing a focused program of research relating to the interests of the Victorian Financial Services industry, government and associated academia. The research program includes:
