Professor Kim Langfield-Smith

Professor Langfield-Smith is Professor of Management Accounting in the Department of Accounting and Finance and is the Head of the Department. She rejoined the Department in 2002 from La Trobe University where she was Head of the School of Business, having previously worked at Monash from 1992 to 1997. Kim has over 20 years' experience as a teacher and researcher. Prior academic appointments include University of Melbourne (Melbourne Business School), the University of Tasmania, and University of Technology, Sydney, as well as visiting appointments at the Australian Graduate School of Management, Naval Postgraduate School (Monterey, CA), Lancaster University (UK), London School of Economics and Copenhagen Business School. Kim has also worked as an accountant or consultant to several commercial and government organisations.

Kim is a co-author of the best selling text Management Accounting: Information for Managing and Creating Value , (McGraw-Hill Australia), now in its fourth edition. Kim was President (Australia) of the Accounting Association of Australia and New Zealand (AAANZ) (now called AFAANZ) from 1999 to 2001. She is an active member of CPA Australia participating in several education and policy committees.

Professor Langfield-Smith's research interests are in the area of management control systems, performance measurement systems and behavioural management accounting, and she has published over 40 refereed journal articles, chapters and books in the accounting and management fields. She has published in a range of leading journals such as Accounting, Organisations and Society , Journal of Management Accounting Research , Management Accounting Research , Behavioral Research in Accounting , Journal of Accounting Literature , Journal of Management Studies and Human Factors . Kim has been awarded research grants from major bodies such as the Australian Research Council. In both 1999 and 2000 she received awards from the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) for her contribution to management accounting research.

Research: Management accounting, including the adoption and implementation of innovative performance measurement systems, control implications of e-procurement systems, and behavioural aspects of management accounting systems.
