Accounting and Finance Leadership Program

Activities

Activities

This program provides students with an opportunity to develop a wide range of generic skills in conjunction with their degree. It is anticipated that many of these skills will enhance students' leadership potential in the workplace as well as benefit their university studies.

Workshops and Forums- The program will commence with a two day residential program in February 2010 which will be run by professional corporate trainers. There will also be a follow up one day workshop in February 2011. We will also conduct approximately six evening forums in each of the two years of the program.  These activities are designed to help students develop skills in areas such as problem solving; self management skills (managing time, handling stress, handling criticism, taking responsibility, self confidence, networking); leadership skills; communication skills including "active listening" and "questioning" skills; teamwork and negotiating.

Business Games - Students will be part of a team that participates in selected business games conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, the Boston Consulting Group or by participating in the annual UBS Investment Banking challenge. These are seen as an important peer learning group activity where students will apply and develop considerable technical, generic and leadership skills.

Capstone Unit - As part of their degree, students will be encouraged to undertake a multi-disciplinary unit that integrates accounting and finance as well involving practical analyses of firms' business strategy and industry position. Use of case studies relating to real companies will facilitate industry interaction as well as enhancing problem solving skills.

Mentors -Students will be allocated mentors at one of a number of participating organisations. Students will also have opportunities to interview senior executives in industry.

In sum, we will be developing creative thinking, communication and self management skills as well as raising general business awareness in the first year of the program, with a greater emphasis on developing leadership skills in the second year of the program.
