Professor Kim Langfield-Smith is Deputy Dean (Research) and Professor of Management Accounting. Prior to this appointment she was Head of the Department of Accounting and Finance at Monash and Head of the School of Business at La Trobe University. Previous academic appointments were at the Melbourne Business School, the University of Tasmania, and University of Technology, Sydney.
Her qualifications are Bachelor of Economics from the University of Sydney, Master of Economics from Macquarie University, and a PhD from Monash University, and she is a fellow of both CPA Australia (FCPA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (FCA).
Kim is an active member of the accounting profession. She is chair of the Accreditation Advisory Committee of CPA Australia and is the nominee of CPA Australia and ICAA on the International Accounting Education Standards Board (IAESB). From 1999 to 2001, she was President of the Accounting Association of Australian and New Zealand (AAANZ) (now called AFAANZ), the professional organization for accounting and finance academics.
Research
Kim has over 25 years experience teaching and researching in the area of management accounting. She researches how management control systems, including financial and non-financial performance measurement systems can be designed and used to enhance organizational performance; the relationship between management accounting systems and organizational strategy; and the design of management control systems in outsourcing relationships, strategic alliances and supply chains. She has published over 50 refereed journal articles, chapters and books in accounting, management and psychology journals and has been awarded research grants from bodies such as the Australian Research Council.
Kim has received three awards from the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) for her contribution to management accounting research. She is a co-author of the best selling textbook Management Accounting: Information for Creating and Managing Value, now in its fifth edition.
