Faculty Education Commitee

Terms of Reference

To advise the Faculty Board on matters pertaining to education policy, initiatives and strategic. More specifically:

  • To provide academic advice to inform the Faculty's strategic and operational planning processes
  • To consider the strategic implications of new course proposals and of amendments to courses involving issues of University level strategic significance
  • To oversee the evaluation of existing offerings against their objectives and make strategic recommendations regarding programs for development, modification and discontinuation
  • To enhance learning and teaching and ensure the efficient and effective administration of courses and teaching:
    • consider and make recommendations to the Faculty Board on education policies relating to coursework (including admission), and ensure implementation as appropriate
    • consider and approve procedures relating to academic coursework matters and ensure implementation as appropriate
  • To consider policy implications from groups such as Board of Examiners, Academic Progess, Discipline, Grievance and Qualification Assessment and Advanced Standing, to effect improvements in educational programs
  • To determine an annual scholarship strategy and to monitor implementation of coursework scholarship programs and expenditure against budget
  • To monitor performance indicators relating to coursework matters
  • To ensure that academic standards for awards are appropriate across disciplines and campuses, and ensure reasonable consistency in regulations, policies and practices
  • To advise Faculty Board on requirements and ensure implementation of the University’s education policies, plans, initiatives and decisions of relevant committees, as appropriate
  • To respond as appropriate to university, government and other agency proposals on education related issues
  • To refer matters of relevance to other Faculty committees as appropriate
  • To consider and report on any matter referred to the Committee by the Faculty Board, the Faculty Executive Committee, the Dean or the education area of the Deanery.

Scope and Definitions

This Committee operates in accordance with the provisions of the University's academic policies and decisions of the Admissions Committee, Education Committee and Academic Board, as appropriate.

The terms of reference for the Committee apply equally to all undergraduate and graduate coursework programs, nationally and internationally.

The term 'coursework' will be used to encompass undergraduate and graduate courses and units of the Faculty and teaching of coursework components of research programs. The Education Committee will consider and make recommendations on policy in relation to coursework study. However, course and unit proposals relating to research awards will require endorsement by Research Degrees Committee.

The term 'undergraduate' refers to undergraduate courses and fourth year honours programs.

The term 'graduate' will be used to encompass graduate and postgraduate studies.

The term 'graduate courses' will be used to encompass Executive and Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas and Maters degrees by coursework of the Faculty of Business and Economics, and will specifically not include the PhD and Masters by Research degrees which are the responsibility of the Faculty's Research Degrees Committee.
