The role of the Chief Examiner

Chief Examiners should be aware that the Monash Discipline (Student) Guidelines provide that the level of proof of intent required is "on the balance of probabilities" - that is, it must be a reasonable conclusion on the facts that it is more likely than not that the student had the necessary intention to gain an unfair advantage. It is the examiner's responsibility to separate poor referencing, which may result in a reduction in the marks and a counseling session, from intending to gain an unfair advantage by using other work and failing to correctly site other sources.

For further information, see the Faculty’s policy on Responsibilities of Chief Examiners.

The assignment cover sheet

All students must submit assignments with the approved assignment cover sheet. The cover sheet must be signed by the student. Assignment instructions (when distributed) should contain a statement referring the student to the notice on cheating contained on the assignment cover sheet. The Chief Examiner should always be able to say to every student, 'I have taken all possible steps to bring the rules on cheating to your attention. If you aren't aware of the rules, it can only be because you have willfully refused to read them.' Willful ignorance or blindness is to be treated as actual knowledge.

Faculty Student Plagiarism and Cheating register

On request the Chief Examiner should be provided with information kept on the Plagiarism register. The register will be maintained by the Faculty Secretariat, which will record warnings and the outcomes (if any) of an accusation of plagiarism.  A student’s involvement in alleged plagiarism will be retained on the register whilst still enrolled and staff will have access to this information when considering any subsequent allegations of plagiarism.

Request for information on previous plagiarism and cheating form.

However, it is not necessary for the Chief Examiner to refer to the register. Where the Chief Examiner is satisfied that intent exists, she or he can disallow the work and issue the requisite notice without further inquiry.

Student Discipline and SWOT VAC and Examinations

Normally the hearing of the student’s case before the Faculty Discipline Committee will not be scheduled during SWOT VAC or the Examinations period, unless the scheduled date and time of the hearing during this period is agreed to by the student.
