Supplementary Assessment - Graduate Students Only policy

Purpose

To provide information about supplementary assessment for graduate students.

Scope

This policy applies to all graduate coursework students in the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Policy Statement

Supplementary assessment
Supplementary assessment (there may be examinations, assignments, orals, etc.) is granted to a student in accord with the prescribed rules and conditions of the relevant Faculty Board (see Section 4 of the University's Examination Regulations). Supplementary assessment is intended to be bestowed in predefined and determinable circumstances such as when a candidate obtains a mark in a particular mark range or after certain prerequisites have been satisfied.

Supplementary assessment is not granted to undergraduate or Honours students. Undergraduate students should refer instead to the Faculty Near Pass policy.

Graduate students who fail a unit, which is the last unit necessary to complete a course of study and which has been undertaken in the last semester of study, will be given supplementary assessment in that unit provided that they have completed all the work for the unit, have sat any final examination and have obtained a mark of at least forty per cent in the unit. This provision does not apply to units studied through another Monash Faculty, through Open Learning or through any other institution.

The form of supplementary assessment given to graduate students should cover the whole area of the content of the unit. If the unit contains an examination component students will be given a supplementary examination. If the unit does not contain an examination component students will be given another form of supplementary assessment. Students who believe they have a right to such a supplementary assessment should apply on the form available on the student kiosk, and submit the form to the faculty office within 5 working days of publication of last finalised result.

If a student obtains a mark for the supplementary assessment that is lower than the original mark, the examiner is to return the higher mark.

After supplementary assessment an upper ceiling of P (50) shall apply.

Power to award supplementary assessment
The power to award supplementary assessment is vested in the Faculty's Board of Examiners and the duly appointed delegates of the Faculty Board (see Examinations Regulations).

Examination procedures
These are essentially the same as those for final examinations (Examinations Regulations, Final Examinations). Staff are advised to ascertain from the faculty administrative office on their campus whether (and, if so, when) they will be required to be available to set and examine supplementary examination papers.

Assistance to students
Teaching staff are not obliged to provide extra tuition to students who have been awarded supplementary assessment.

Special consideration for supplementary assessment
In cases where a graduate student is granted a supplementary examination and then submits a special consideration application for the period of the supplementary examination, a further deferral of the examination will not normally be granted in such circumstances.

Timing of supplementary examinations
The official examination period of the University commences at the end of each semester. Supplementary examinations are usually scheduled in the official University period for supplementary and deferred examinations as specified by the Academic Board of the University. Alternatively, the student may choose to sit the examination either the next time the unit is offered or, in exceptional circumstances, at a time arranged with the chief examiner in the unit. In both cases this must be earlier than the designated University period for supplementary and deferred examinations for the semester of enrolment in the unit.

All rights to supplementary assessment are forfeited if not taken up by the supplementary/deferred exam period, following the student's enrolment in the unit.

Final result determination after completion of supplementary assessment
Where a second result is returned for a student in a unit in a given semester (e.g. following supplementary assessment), the higher of the two results should be retained.
