Open Learning Australia Units policy

Purpose

To provide information about the academic progress and exclusion processes in the faculty.

Scope

This policy applies to all undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in programs managed by the Faculty.

Policy Statement

Undergraduate students

Undergraduate students must seek written approval of their Course Director or Course Co-ordinator prior to enrolling in any Open Learning Australia (OLA) unit. The Faculty of Business and Economics provides a wide range of units, and many are available through off campus learning. Permission to enrol in OLA faculty units will only be given in exceptional circumstances. Once approved, the enrolment will be considered part of the student's enrolment toward their Monash degree.

If approval is sought for an OLA unit that is equivalent to a unit the student is eligible to take within their degree program (including as an elective), then evidence must be provided that the student is unable to undertake the equivalent faculty unit. They must also pay the appropriate fee. OLA enrolment must not be used as a way of accelerating degree progress by overloading.

If the OLA unit is equivalent to an off campus learning unit a student is eligible to take, and has similar content and overlapping timing, then the student must enrol into the off campus learning unit. If the OLA unit is equivalent to a unit from a degree family other than that in which the student is enrolled, the normal degree rules relating to units taken from the other degree family will apply. In cases where an equivalent or alternative off campus learning unit is not offered with appropriate timing, students may apply to enrol in an OLA unit. In this situation the approval of the faculty offered OLA unit will be considered in the same way as would the approval of the equivalent unit offered within the relevant Faculty degree program. Normal degree rules relating to units taken from that faculty degree will be applied, including those relating to units taken from other degree families, campuses, or study modes.

Graduate students

Some graduate units offered through the faculty are also offered through OLA. Students enrolled through the faculty receive regular advice about their choice of units and changes to the unit-offering schedule or award programs, as well as access to a wide range of university resources. Students are encouraged to enrol through normal faculty awards.

Enrolment in Open Learning units provided by other faculties of Monash University or other institutions

Enrolment in OLA units that are not offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics is a type of cross-institutional study. Students who wish to enrol in these units can do so under the faculty's cross-institutional enrolment policy.
