Deferment and Intermission policy

Purpose

To provide guidance to students on deferral and the amount of intermission they may take and how this affects their time limits for completing a program of study.

Scope

This policy applies to all undergraduate and graduate coursework students enrolled in programs managed by the Faculty.

Policy Statement

Deferment

Coursework students may apply to defer their initial enrolment in a course. In accordance with university procedures, a student may defer the commencement of their course prior to the beginning of classes or up until the next applicable census date. The maximum deferral period is one year.

Intermission

Undergraduate and graduate students who experience difficulties during the year, or who wish to take a year off study for any reason, can obtain intermission from their studies. Intermission is normally granted for one year only. Further periods of intermission will only be granted in exceptional circumstances.
By granting such leave, the faculty reserves a place in the course. The maximum time limit for completion of each course is given in the faculty regulations included in the Student Information Index (SII).

International students

Under the Educational Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 (ESOS Act), intermission for international students on a study visa can only be approved on grounds of genuine illness or compassionate reasons. Students are required to provide supporting documentation for their application.
