Near Pass for last unit for undergraduate degree

Students enrolled in undergraduate courses managed by the Faculty of Business and Economics who fail a unit with a mark between 45% and 49%, which is confirmed to be the last unit necessary to complete a course of study, will be given a Near Pass (NP) in that unit provided that they have completed all the work for the unit, and have sat the final examination.

This grade cannot be granted until all outstanding grades have been converted to marks, and it is confirmed that it is the only unit required for course completion.

Students enrolled in a double degree will be eligible for a Near Pass only for the unit confirmed as the last unit required for course completion in the double degree.

Honours and postgraduate students are not entitled to receive a Near Pass.

Near Pass grade for one of the six compulsory undergraduate core units

Students enrolled in undergraduate courses managed by the Faculty of Business and Economics who fail a unit with a mark between 45% and 49%, which is one of the six compulsory core units offered by the Faculty, may be awarded the grade of Near Pass (NP) by the Board of Examiners for the unit, provided the student has completed all assessment tasks and sat the final examination for the unit.

A maximum of one NP may be awarded under this policy, and the examination result released will show the NP.

Where the student is eligible for more than one Near Pass in the relevant semester, the selection of the unit in which it is awarded will be made by the Board of Examiners.

Students may apply to transfer a Near Pass grade to another unit within six weeks of publication of results. Students may not transfer a Near Pass after this time.

A Near Pass grade awarded under this section of the policy may be counted as the first part of a sequence, and has prerequisite status. However, students are strongly advised to consider their knowledge in this area and to seek course advice from the Faculty before undertaking further study in the discipline area.

Only one Near Pass grade awarded under this policy may be used to meet degree requirements. Students transferring degrees may be granted advanced standing at Near Pass level for one unit for which they have achieved a Near Pass grade. However, in this case they will not be eligible to receive an additional NP grade for subsequent units.

Near Pass grades and undergraduate degree requirements

Undergraduate students will be entitled to credit for a maximum of two NP grades in any degree - one awarded for the last unit to complete degree requirements, and the other awarded in a compulsory core unit. If a student subsequently enrols in an additional degree they may be granted up to two units of advanced standing at NP level for any Near Pass previously awarded. However, these Near Passes will be counted in assessing the student's entitlement to award of any Near Pass grades in their current award.

Students wishing to receive professional accreditation are advised to contact the relevant accreditation body to determine the status of Near Pass (NP) grades.

Near Pass grades awarded to students transferring from within the University

Students transferring from within the University with an NP grade or its equivalent (P11 etc) can only be credited with a relevant unit at an NP level.

Policy transition arrangements

The grade NP applies to the undergraduate degrees (single and double) managed by the Faculty of Business and Economics. Students enrolled prior to 2000 who did not elect to convert to the 2000 structure are not eligible (except at Clayton where prior NP/NS rules will be applied to 1999 and earlier degree structures). All students must follow the rules applicable at the time of their enrolment or conversion.

Students granted supplementary examinations for units undertaken in 2003 must complete the examination requirements for those units by the end of the 2003 supplementary examination period in January 2004.

No supplementary examinations will be awarded for units undertaken by undergraduate students in the 2003/2004 summer semester or beyond.
