Policy Statement
|
Faculty policy on special consideration is largely determined by University special consideration policy and procedure.
Further to the University's regulations and policy on special consideration, the following shall apply to candidates within the faculty:
Special consideration may be granted to students whose performance in an examination or other assessment has been significantly affected by acute illness or other exceptional cause. Students who complete their final examination or end-of-semester assessment task will not be eligible for special consideration.
Where special consideration has already been granted for a given set of circumstances, further special consideration will not normally be granted for the same in-semester and end of semester assessment task.
Applications for special consideration will only be considered when accompanied by appropriate supporting documentation.
Lack of facility with English is not a reason for special consideration to be granted.
Within semester assessment Potential outcomes resulting from a successful request for special consideration in relation to in-semester assessment may include granting additional assessment, or time.
Applications for special consideration in relation to in-semester assessment will be approved by the chief examiner.
End of semester examination Students who complete the final examination/assessment task will not be eligible for special consideration.
A deferred examination is the only outcome from a successful end of semester request for special consideration. Applications for special consideration in relation to end of semester examinations will be approved by the faculty's board of examiners on the recommendation of Group Manager, Student Services.
Supporting documentation
Evidence will only be accepted from professionals who are registered with a professional body, such as social workers, medical practitioners, lawyers, and psychologists.
Medical certificates/professional practitioner statements must state that the student was unfit to sit the examination on the relevant date or unable to complete work for assessment on or before the relevant date. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
Application deadlines and outcomes
Special consideration documentation should be submitted –
Within semester assessment Applications for within semester assessment must be submitted within two University working days of the deadline for submission of the piece of work.
A successful application for special consideration for within semester assessment (applied for by completing a Special Consideration Application Form (in-semester exam/assessment task)) may result in one of the following as determined by the Chief Examiner:
(i) the granting of additional time in which to complete a prescribed piece of assessment; (ii) undertaking a special test, deferred test (either written or oral); (iii) setting an additional piece of work to be completed in order to determine the final result for the unit.
End of semester examination Students are required to submit their application as soon as possible prior to the scheduled examination. If a student has been unable to complete an examination due to falling ill during the examination, the special consideration appication must be submitted no later than two University working days after the date of the last examination scheduled for the candidate (see subsection 3.2 of the Examination regulations).
Assessment of Applications
In semester assessment In-semester applications are lodged with the chief examiner
End of Semester examination Applications for end of semester special consideration must be lodged at the relevant faculty office.
A successful application for special consideration for end of semester examinations (applied for by completing an Application for Special Consideration form) will result in the granting of a deferred examination for the unit. Applications for special consideration for end of semester examinations will be assessed by the Group Manager, Student Services and approved by the Board of Examiners.
Late Applications
(i) The Associate Dean (Undergraduate) and the Deputy Dean Education may accept a late application for special consideration in exceptional circumstances where they are satisfied that a student was unable to make an application by the required date due to reasons beyond their control,
(ii) Late applications for special consideration will not be accepted after the results in the unit have been formally published by the university under any circumstances.
Delayed deferred exams
Delayed-deferred examinations may only be granted in exceptional circumstances beyond the control of the student. An example is where the student was an inpatient in a hospital on the day of the examination.
Applicants must submit a written request together with a copy of the original deferred examination application and supporting evidence, to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education or nominee (Building 3A, Monash University, Clayton Campus, 3800) no later than two University working days after the relevant deferred examination.
Applicants must provide substantiated evidence of extenuating circumstances beyond their control which prevented them from sitting the scheduled deferred examination.
Delayed deferred examinations must be completed in the next available scheduled examination period, which should be no later than six months from the original deferred examination date.
Teaching staff are not obliged to provide extra tuition to students who have been awarded deferred or delayed deferred examinations.
