Blogs and Podcasts

Introduction

A weblog , which is usually shortened to blog, is a type of website where entries are made (such as in a journal or diary), displayed in a reverse chronological order.

Blogs often provide commentary or news on a particular subject, such as food, politics, or local news; some function as more personal online diaries . A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. Most blogs are primarily textual although many focus on photograph (photoblog), videos (vlog), or audio (podcasting).

Podcasts explained, "more than just an audio blog"

Podcasting is the method of distributing multimedia files, such as audio programs or music videos, over the Internet. The term podcast, like 'radio', can mean both the content and the method of delivery.

Though podcasters' web sites may also offer direct download or streaming of their files; a podcast however is distinguished by its ability to be downloaded to you computer automatically using software capable of subscribing to and reading the feeds. This software will check for new files while you are connected to the Internet. Some newer mobile phones and PDAs now have this ability.

Create an audio or video podcast

A simple way to Podcast is to create a blog, enable a feed, then post your audio files. Audio files can be created in .MP3 format using a PC microphone and software like Wavepad or Audacity, both free to download. Video content is more difficult to produce. A digital video camera (and assistance in using it) is available for loan from the Education Office. Assitance in getting started with podcasting is available through the Education Office.
