Gary Heilbronn graduated from the University of Queensland in politics and literature in 1969 and law in 1972. He was in general law practise, specializing in civil and criminal litigation and trial work before completing his first postgraduate studies in criminology at Melbourne University in 1975 after which he practised law in Melbourne for a period, before studying languages in Europe.
He commenced his academic career in 1979 as a research assistant, then senior tutor at the Law Faculty, Monash University while undertaking further postgraduate studies primarily in aviation and transport law, completing Post Graduate Diploma in Commercial Law in 1982 and LL.M. in 1983. He accepted a post in 1982 in Geneva at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) as Acting Assistant Director Aeropolitical Affairs and then Manager, Policy Research in the Office of the Director General (IATA). In 1986, he was appointed to the Faculty of Law, University of Hong Kong as lecturer, senior lecturer and then Associate Professor (1995-1997) and in the 1990's served as Associate Dean for two years, Acting Dean and Acting Head of Department for various periods. Gary was awarded his Ph.D. on the topic of the commercial obligations between airlines and their agents by Queensland University in 1996. Since that time he has held various law consultancy posts concurrently, on a part-time, full-time and casual basis having been a Consultant with Johnson, Stokes and Master, Solicitors and Notaries, Hong Kong since 1994, a Course Leader, IATA Learning Centre Geneva (1998-2000), and since 2003, has been an independent Aviation Legislation Consultant, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Technical Cooperation Bureau.
In recent years, Gary Heilbronn has somewhat changed focus back to research and writing being appointed to the Law Faculty, Monash University as an Honorary Associate (2007-2009) and to the Business and Economics Faculty, Department of Business Law and Taxation, as an Honorary Research Fellow (2009 -).
Publications
Gary's main areas of publication have been aviation and tourism law, beginning with his 1992 book Travel and Tourism Law in Australia and New Zealand, but he has also written on various aspects of litigation law beginning with a book he co-authored in 1981: Introducing the Law and has gone into its 7th edition in 2007. In recent years, he has authored the original and most recent editions of the Aviation title and Air Carriage subtitle in Laws of Australia, vol 34 (Transport), a book on Aviation Regulation and Licensing in 2008, the Civil Aviation title in vol 4 of Halsbury's Laws of Hong Kong in 1999 and the two editions of the Carriage by Air title in Chitty on Contracts, Hong Kong Specific Contracts in 2004 and 2008. He also wrote three editions of Criminal Procedure in Hong Kong between 1992 and 1998, co-authored Enforcement of Judgments in Hong Kong in 1998 and was the editor and contributor or contributor to various books on various aspects of litigation law, environmental law and aviation and travel law in Hong Kong. He has also published some more than thirty peer-refereed journal articles in Australia and internationally and presented many conference papers. In the 1990s, he was also a co-investigator on a major project to create a database of superior court judgments in Hong Kong which eventually became the basis of Butterworths Hong Kong cases and the Hong Kong Government's judgments database in its Bilingual Legal Information Service. Teaching and Research
At the moment, Gary's main areas of research are in aviation law, in particular consumer-related aspects and airport security.
He has no teaching responsibilities in his present post but has previously taught postgraduate courses in aviation law and international travel law as well as undergraduate and professional law courses in civil procedure, criminal procedure, torts, advocacy, commercial law practise.
