Paul Sugden

He completed a BA (majoring in economics and history) and LLB (Qld), and an LLM at the University of London in 1988 in intellectual property law and Comparative Anti trust law.

Before joining the Department, Paul worked at the Department of Commerce at the University of Queensland teaching law.

In addition he was a solicitor for 14 years practising in the field of commercial law specialising in intellectual property and corporate restructuring with international and specialist law firms.

He was the Queensland Chairperson of the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand Inc for a period of six years from 1994.

Paul Sugden is an honorary solicitor to Australian Textile Fibre Forum Ltd on intellectual property issues for the use of artistic works etc, and advises VACC on intellectual property issues in the motor industry.

He is currently enrolled in a PhD at Monash examining remedies in intellectual property law. He has written articles for refereed and professional journals in this area together with articles on credit law and business law generally.

Teaching

Paul Sugden is a lecturer in law.

Research

His field of research examines the relevance and effects of intellectual property law on business organisations and information technology.

Paul Sugden won a Victorian Government tender for development of the Workshop Module in Entrepreneurship on Intellectual Property Laws. This course is an initiative of the Victorian Government to focus on the skills and knowledge required by entrepreneurs to develop their ideas into a business. The course is to be presented in five separate workshop modules focusing on the accounting, marketing and legal environments of innovation from the idea to business.
