Paul von Nessen graduated from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina in 1971, and became a CPA (North Carolina) two years later (currently inactive). He obtained his law degree from the University of South Carolina in 1974 before practicing law in Atlanta, Georgia until 1978. In 1979, he obtained his LLM from Cambridge, before relocating to Australia in 1980. In 2004 Paul was awarded a Ph.D. on the use of comparative law in Australia.

Paul commenced his academic career as a senior tutor and lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Monash University.

From 1985 to 1994, he served as lecturer, senior lecturer and associate professor in the Department of Business Law at the University of Melbourne, eventually serving as the Head of Department (1992-93).

In 1994, Paul became Professor and Head of Business Law at RMIT. In 1998, he became the McCullough Robertson Professor of Corporate Law, in the Faculty of Law, QUT, Brisbane.

He has been a Head of Department in the Department of Business Law and Taxation, Monash University between 2002-2005.

Publications

Paul has published a number of articles in corporate law, comparative law, taxation law, and managed investments.

He has produced numerous annual editions of Essential Corporate Legislation with Abe Herzberg and Phil Lipton. In 1998, he wrote Practical Guide to Managed Investments, co-authoring a second edition with Sean Robertson of McCullough Robertson, Brisbane, in 2002. Paul remains a Special Counsel specialising in corporate advice with McCullough Robertson, Brisbane.

Teaching and Research

Paul's areas of research interest include corporate law, comparative law, and managed investments.

He has taught a wide range of subjects in Business/Commerce faculties and in Law faculties. He has been a visiting scholar in the law faculties at Stanford University, UCLA, and Duke University
