Study Workplace Negotiations with Industry and Regulatory Experts

Semester 1, 2008

  • You will learn the legal framework and practical skills for workplace negotiation, bargaining and dispute resolution in Australia.
  • You will enhance your negotiation, bargaining and mediation skills by participating in the examination of relevant case studies and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.
  • You will meet key industry and union representatives, who will be brought in as guest speakers.

The unit will also cover:
  • all relevant aspects of the Federal Work Choices legislation
  • the role of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission
  • private dispute resolution providers
  • foundations of effective negotiation and successful negotiation strategies, as applied
    to both individual and collective workplace disputes
  • comparisons with workplace dispute resolution laws in the UK, Ireland and New Zeland

Dates

The unit will be taught intensively at the Caulfield Campus between Monday 18 and Friday 22 February 2008.

Assessment

  • 10% oral component (class attendance and participation)
  • 40% 3,000 word research paper
  • 50% 4,000 word final examination (take-home)
