The influence of "corporate social responsibility" on the management of labour: two Australian case studies

Date: Tuesday 18th July, 2006

This seminar addressed the impact that corporate social responsibility (CSR) has upon the management of labour.

The presentation was drawn from a broader research project being carried out in the Law School at the University of Melbourne on Corporate Governance and Workplace Partnerships. The data is taken from two case studies based in the Australian mining industry – Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton.

The seminar addressed the regulatory framework for CSR, the factors which contribute to a CSR strategy, and the extent to which CSR policy may influence various labour management techniques in the context of international exposure to reputational risk.

Guest speakers

Meredith Jones and Shelley Marshall are Research Fellows in the Corporate Governance and Workplace Partnerships Project, University of Melbourne Law School.

Richard Mitchell is a Professorial Fellow engaged on that project, and a Professor with the Department of Business Law and Taxation, Monash University.
