The Shopfloor to Boardroom Research Project

Shopfloor to Boardroom was the largest ever research project undertaken by the ACRS. Spanning three years of data collection, and three distinct phases, the research developed an in-depth understanding of shopfloor employees, middle-managers and CEO’s.

The three phases encompassed in the report are; Onto the Shopfloor (interviews and focus groups with young adults and interviews with HR Managers), Into Management (interviews with Marketing, Buying, Merchandising, HR, and Store Operations managers) and Into the Boardroom (in-depth interviews with senior level retail executives).

The primary areas that were researched through the interviews include:

  • Perceptions of retail and working in the industry
  • Recruitment criteria and difficulties
  • Retention and turnover
  • Succession planning and career paths
  • Progression up the retail ladder

Made possible through the generous support of our Research Sponsors, the report has now been completed and is the first of its kind to be released in Australia. The findings are of great value to all of those involved with the industry – particularly in light of the impending labour shortages.

The report provides invaluable insight into retail recruitment, turnover, and progression within the retail industry. It highlights key perceptions and experiences as explained by those entering the retail industry and experienced retail managers working in Australian retail organisations. Descriptions and explanations of results are provided, as well as relevant quotations from respondents. The results are analysed thoroughly to ensure that reliable and valid conclusions and that practical recommendations are provided for business use.

Due to the depth and scope of these findings and the important repercussions for the retail industry the ACRS is also able to offer a number of other services to those with an interest in making best use of these findings.
