ECC 2700 Health Economics

Objective:
To provide students with an understanding of the goals of the health care systems and the contribution that economic analysis can have in developing methods to allocate resources to meet those goals

Synopsis:

  • The nature of commodity health care and the production of health;
  • Traditional theory of demand compared with alternative views;
  • Economics of insurance and information;
  • Behavior of health care providers including physicians and hospitals;
  • Regulation to meet social objectives including equity and justice;
  • Hospital payment systems
  • The role of regulation
  • Licensure and the professions
  • International comparison of Health system design
  • Introduction to technique of economic evaluation in health care used to set priorities
  • Class presentations (20%)
  • 2 Hour Examination (80%)
