Who are we?

The Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics has more than 20 staff members with wide experience in econometrics and statistics. Some of our most experienced consultants include


Neil Diamond, Director of Consulting

Dr Neil Diamond
B.Sc. (Hons), Ph.D., A. Stat.
Director of Consulting

Dr Diamond has worked as a statistician in both industry and academia. He has over 25 years experience as a consultant working in a diverse range of applications with particular emphasis on the design and analysis of observational studies and experiments, quality improvement and time series modelling.


Professor Rob J Hyndman
B.Sc. (Hons), Ph.D., A.Stat.

Professor Hyndman has over 20 years consulting experience working with several hundred clients. His consulting practice has covered just about every area of statistics. He is best known as co-author of the international best-selling textbook Forecasting: methods and applications (Makridakis, Wheelwright and Hyndman, 3rd edition, 1998, Wiley). He also publishes regularly in scholarly refereed journals and is an award-winning lecturer at Monash University.


Ewa Szendtur

Ewa Sztendur
B.Sc., Ph.D.

Dr Sztendur is a statistician specialising in experimental design with the main focus on response surface methodology. She has consulted and lectured in statistics at the University of Melbourne and Victoria University. Besides undertaking commercial consulting, Ewa is also the co-ordinator of the statistical service for research students, conducted on behalf of the Monash Research Graduate School.


Cain Polidano
B.AgEcon (Hons), M.AgEcon.

Cain is a PhD student in the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics. His main research area is applied economic and social policy analysis using cross section and panel data. Prior to commencing his PhD, Cain spent 8 years working as a Research Economist for the Australian Government. During this time he completed a number of consulting projects for clients such as the World Bank, International Labour Office, the Government of Alberta and Australian State Governments.


Dr Lee Gordon-Brown
B.Eng., Ph.D.

Dr. Gordon-Brown is a specialist in business modelling and decision support systems and has had wide experience in business analysis and simulation using exact and heuristic techniques. Consulting experience has included consulting engineering and business simulation projects for Phillip Morris, several Victorian Government Departments, the Australian Greenhouse Office, Multiplex and the Municipal Association of Victoria.


Dr Catherine Forbes
B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D.

Dr. Forbes is a specialist in Bayesian statistical methods and has published in the areas of financial modelling, nonlinear time series and model selection. She has had a variety of consulting experience in academia, business and the manufacturing industry.


Dr Simone Grose
B.Ec. (Hons), Ph.D.

Dr. Grose is an econometrician with experience in time series modelling and forecasting, including modelling consumer demand and financial returns data. Consulting experience includes a major project for a large utility involving the use of billing data to forecast sales.


Dr Mark Harris
B.A. (Hons), Grad. Dip. Ec., Ph.D.

Dr. Harris is an applied econometrician with significant experience in the analysis of cross section, survey and panel data. Mark has undertaken numerous consultancy projects including research for: the Reserve Bank of Australia, Department of Family and Community Servives, the Productivity Commision, the ATO, Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance, DEETYA and IBIS. He was also part of the development team of MITTS, a microsimulation model of the Australian tax and transfer system.


Associate Professor Brett Inder
B.Ec. (Hons), Ph.D.

Associate Professor Inder is an econometrician specialising in modelling economic and business time series. He has published several influential papers on state-of-the-art model building methodology and theory. His consulting experience covers both private business and government. Associate Professor Inder received the vice-chancellor's award for Excellence in Teaching in 1996.


Professor Maxwell L King
B.Sc. (Hons), M.Com., Ph.D., FASSA.

Professor King is an internationally renowned econometrician with special expertise in model selection and hypothesis testing. He is also Director of the Monash Research Graduate School and has received the vice-chancellor's award for postgraduate supervision. Professor King has published over 60 academic papers in econometrics and statistics.


Associate Professor Ralph Snyder
B.Ec. (Hons), M.Ec., Ph.D.

Associate Professor Snyder is a specialist in business modelling and operations research. The primary focus of his research has been on quantitative and statistical methods for sales forecasting and inventory management, with many publications in leading US and British academic journals. He has consulted extensively with Australian business and industry, most recently specialising in the distribution of car parts. Some of his methods of inventory control have been implemented by leading Australian and Malaysian companies; one case resulted in savings in excess of ten million dollars.
