Monash Actuarial Program

In early 2008 the Faculty of Business and Economics appointed two fully-qualified actuaries to its teaching staff in the Econometrics and Business Statistics Department, with the aim of developing a program within the Faculty to offer the full range of actuarial subjects within the B.Com degree.

A program has been designed for commencement from 2009, and details of the program have been submitted to the Institute of Actuaries of Australia for accreditation.

The latest information from the Institute (as at 16 October 2008 ) indicates that the accreditation of Monash's actuarial studies program may be expected to take place in 2 stages as follows.

  1. Initially , accreditation is expected to cover four subjects of the Institute's part I course, namely CT2, CT3, CT7 and CT8. This accreditation is expected to be granted, commencing for the first semester of 2009, covering the areas of financial accounting, statistics, economics and financial economics (including financial econometrics).
  2. At the second stage , Monash would apply for accreditation in the remaining four subjects of the Institute's part I course, namely CT1, CT4, CT5 and CT6. It is expected that accreditation of these subjects may be obtained in late 2009 or early 2010 . It is also possible that accreditation may be granted retrospectively to the relevant Monash units offered in 2009, although this cannot be guaranteed. These four subjects cover the areas of mathematics of finance, actuarial modelling, contingencies and actuarial statistical methods.

Accreditation by the Institute of Actuaries of particular Monash units would enable students who achieve sufficiently high enough results (e.g. at Distinction level) to be granted automatic exemption in respect of the associated subjects of the Institute's part I examinations.
