Developing Interesting and Relevant Curriculum

Developing and Assessing Students' Research Skills in the Curriculum

Facilitator: Dr John Willison (University of Adelaide)

Monday, 14 July, Caulfield, Theatre HB.40, Building H (basement)
Tuesday, 15 July, Clayton, Theatre ST1, Building 25 (Eastern side of Science Building)

Lecturers in Business Law and Business Ethics at the University of Adelaide are presently utilising the Research Skills Development (RSD) framework to explicitly and coherently facilitate students' research shills.  They have utilised the RSD to inform small but highly significant changes to their assessment tasks to enable a more explicit and incremental approach to facilitating these skills.  This seminar introduces the RSD and details examples of its use.

This seminar would suite academic and professional staff who are interested in ways of practically embedding research skill development in small, medium or large courses.  Access to the website http://www.adelaide.edu.au/clpd/rsd prior to the seminar is encouraged, as the RSD and downloadable examples may be found there.  An Australian Teaching and Learning Council (formerly Carrick) grant supports the provision of RSD handbooks, as well as lunch and drinks.

For interested staff, a follow-up workshop will be held from 2pm - 4pm, following the lunchtime seminar, on the respective campus, as set out below.

Locating the Development and Assessment of Student Research Skills in the Curriculum

Having conceptualised Research Skills Development approaches in the seminar Developing and Assessing Student Research Skills in the Curriculum, this workshop will provide participants an opportunity to collaborate on application of RSD to a relevant course or program.  It also includes examples of the use of contemporary technologies, such as wikis.  Potential outcomes include:

  • a deepened udnerstanding of the benefits and implicantions of RSD
  • a collegial conversations critiquing Business/Economics assessment and curriculum, using the RSD as a conceptual frame of reference
  • a draft assessment/set of assessments based on the RSD.

Visiting the website http://www.adelaide.edu.au/clpd/rsd prior to the seminar is recommended to make the most of this workshop.  An Australian Teaching and Learning Council (formerly Carrick) grant supports the provision of RSD handbooks, as well as lunch and drinks.

The Case of Climate Change and Sustainable Business

Facilitators: Mr Jeff McLean (Department of Management) and Mr Wayne Gumley (Department of Business Law and Taxation)

Tuesday, 22 July, Caulfield, Theatre HB.40, Building H (basement)
Thursday, 24 July, Clayton, Education Room 164, Building 6

In this session Jeff McLean and/or Wayne Gumley will briefly introduce and workshop the rationale for, and strategies to introduce relevant Climate Change & Sustainable Business (CC&SB) related content into a wide range of business units.  There is little argument now that the challenges of CC&SB and related issues (eg, water, peak oil) will have a very significant impact on "life as we know it', including business strategies and operations into the future.  As Sir Nicholas Stern stated in his 2006 report on the economics of climate change, "Business as usual is not an option" - hence, our curriculum must change to reflect these crucial issues.

They will also briefly introduce and explain the CC&SB project, as well as the CC&SB Teaching and Research resources website that has been developed within the Faculty to support staff.

TO ATTEND: please register for seminars.  Registration is required for catering pursposes.
