Academic Governance Unit

1.1 Unit Coding Logic

In accordance with the University Unit Coding policy, each unit will consist of three alphabetical characters, followed by four numeric characters e.g. ABC1234.

The Faculty utilises the following unit coding logic:

(a) A three character alpha code will be assigned for units primarily offered as a component of a ‘specialist’ course or program:
MBS – Units offered in the MBA programs
MON – Unit offered in the Passport framework

(b) Where a course specific units is not appropriate, the first two alphabetical characters of the unit code are used to indicate the unit ownership:
AF -      Accounting and Finance
BT -      Business Law and Taxation
ET -      Econometrics and Business Statistics
EC -      Economics
MG -     Management
MK –    Marketing

BE – units offered that do not have specific departmental ownership

(c) Where a course specific units is not appropriate, the final alphabetical character is used to indicate degree family, campus of offering or learning approach:

(i) Undergraduate
C -   Bachelor of Commerce (including the Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Accounting degrees)
F -   Bachelor of Business
W - Bachelor of Business and Commerce
X – Units offered across more than one degree family
P -   Problem based learning
G -        Bachelor of Business and Commerce (Gippsland)

(ii) Graduate
F -        Caulfield
C -        Clayton
G -        Gippsland
X -        Units offered across more than one campus

(c) The first numeric character indicates the year level of the unit.

Unit Level        Unit Level Description
1                       First year level in Undergraduate program
2                       Second year level in Undergraduate program
3                       Third year level in Undergraduate program
4                       Fourth year level in Undergraduate program, Honours, Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate or Masters
5                       Fifth year level in Master’s degree program (i.e.: Master’s degree program requires a specialisation of 24 credit points at 5th year level).
6                       Doctoral degree program
9                       Introductory Graduate level (taken in Graduate Diploma or certificate or Master’s program)

(d) The remaining three numeric characters may be used by the unit owner (departments, centres or Faculty) to indicate further internal rationale, as required or appropriate.

1.2 Unit Coding Rules

(a)        A single unit code will be used where units are identical in content and key teaching areas, such as:
•           unit objectives;
•           learning outcomes;
•           teaching style; and,
•           assessment

(b)        Different unit codes may be used where units with the same, or similar content, are taught to different student cohorts (e.g. Undergraduate/Graduate, across the different Undergraduate programs).

Where a different unit code is used for an identical unit taught to different student cohorts, the nature of the difference must be noted in the corporate record of the units, including the unit outlines.

Differences may include:
•           unit objectives, and/or
•           learning outcomes, and/or
•           teaching style, and/or
•           assessment

Multi-Level Units
A unit will be deemed to require a multi-level code where the listed unit must be taught at two levels.  This must only occur where course rules prevent a cohort of students from studying a unit they should reasonably be able to study and amendment to the course rules is not a viable solution.
