Agribusiness Value Adding Award 1997

Manildra Group

The Manildra Group adds value at each stage of the agribusiness chain. The chain commences with purchasing wheat from farmers and ends with production and sale of ethanol and turning the full circle with sales of silage back to farmers grown on the company farm. The silage is protein enriched from water spray irrigated onto the farm.

The importance of adding value in our business can be highlighted with the following points: Eight years ago the amount of wheat processed was 250,000 tonnes compared to 450,000 today. Sales have grown 127% from 1989 to present. In this period Manildra has realised the key to growth and success is to continue to add value to products. The major proportion of this sales growth can be highlighted with the growth of new valued added products:
  • Modified Dry Starches- 326% growth (to the food and paper industry)
  • Ethanol- 1989 $0 to over $20m revenue in 1997 (industrial and fuel customers)
  • Gluten- 203% growth, all exported (Bread and Food Protein enhancement)
  • Silage- 6,000 bales per year
  • Stillage- Recovered from waste, sold as feedstock
  • Flour Mixes- New plant set up in 1996 to add value to flour. Products include Donut,Cake, Specialised Bread and Muffin mixes.

Since 1972 exports have grown 700% represented by 430 containers exported p.a. to 20 countries spread throughout the world.
