Professor Gabriele Lakomski was educated on three continents. Her undergraduate studies and teacher
education training took place in Germany; her Master’s degree was undertaken at The University of
Sydney, Australia, and her doctoral studies took her to the University of Illinois, USA.

Professor Gabriele Lakomski is best known for her critical work on leadership and organizational
learning in both public and private sector organizations. Her research is based on the most recent
scientific understanding of human knowledge acquisition and the processing of information,
developed by connectionist cognitive science. In her work she examines how such empirical
knowledge affects current theories of organizational learning, leadership, organizational culture and
change, as well as the training of managers and administrators. Her research program includes the
analysis of Knowledge Management (KM) as a new tool for managing organizational development
and change.

Located in the Centre for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Melbourne where she is
a Professorial Fellow, Professor Lakomski was Founding Director of the Centre for Organizational
Learning and Leadership, a research centre of the University of Melbourne established to focus on
organizational expertise and knowledge with aspects of leadership.

A member of the Academy of Management (USA), Professor Lakomski served as an executive
member of the Academy’s Management Education Division. She was a Senior Editor of Organization
Studies, and is a member of a number of editorial boards of education and management journals,
including Management Learning. She also serves as Director on the Board of Directors of St.
Michael’s Grammar School in St. Kilda. She resides in Melbourne.
