Strategic Human Resource Management

Research into the status of the HR profession in Australia was conducted in conjunction with the Australian Human Resource Management Institute (AHRI).  The findings reveal a strengthening of the strategic role of the HR professional in Australia with nearly half of the senior manager respondents reporting an active role in all strategic decisions and similar involvement at each stage of the decision-making process.  HR representation on senior committees has also increased since 1995.  These findings suggest that organisational structures are adapting and providing HR with an opportunity to participate at the senior level.  The research also identified a number of challenges for HR professionals in Australia.  Challenges include the potential narrowing of their career base, the need for improved HRM metrics and the need for a broader commitment to HRM attraction and retention initiatives. Results also reveal that expectations of a more strategic business focus for HR are developing in the context of an industrial relations climate that has increased HR's responsibility for employee relations in the workplace. In the face of these complex expectations, australian HR professionals report positive reactions to the changes that have occurred within the HR function; they remain optimistic about their future and their capacity to manage the shifting ground that HRM occupies.
