Monash Governance Forums - 2004

Forums in 2004 in the Monash Governance Forums series were presented by the following prominent speakers.

The twelfth forum in the Monash Governance Forum series was led by
Mr. Abe Herzberg, Monash University and
Mr. Steven Münchenberg, Director Policy, Business Council of Australia
22nd March 2004
Topic: "Governance and CLERP 9"
The forum discussed the CLERP 9 proposals now before the Commonwealth Parliament. Mr. Münchenberg presented and discussed the BCA's views on the provisions of the Corporate Law Economic Reform Program (Audit Reform and Corporate Disclosure) Bill 2003 and Mr Herzberg presented a critical review of the provisions and BCA's response.

The thirteenth forum in the Monash Governance Forums series was led by
Professor Richard Larkins, Vice Chancellor, Monash University and
Mrs. Mavis Smith, Federal President, Australian College of Health Service Executives

Topic: “Governance of Health Services in Australia”

The Forum stimulated discussion of “big picture questions” concerning governance of Australian health services in responding to the desires of the community. Our panel was asked to comment on strengths and weaknesses of the inter-relationships between legislative, funding and other factors which govern the sector. Does the complexity generate creativity and innovation or is it cumbersome and inefficient? What major reforms, if any, should be considered?

The fourteenth forum in the Monash Governance Forums series was led by
Mr Terry Moran, Secretary, Department of Premier and Cabinet and
Dr Bob Smith, Department of Management, Monash University

Topic: “Public Service Independance ”

The Forum examined the features of independence of the public service and how these are serving in the inter-relationships between public sector, the corporate sector and the community. This examination included the effects of public service on integrity and on trust between the public sector and other sectors, the legitimacy of government and the effectiveness of public sector.

The fifteenth forum in the Monash Governance Forums series was led by
Prof Gary Bouma, Former Deputy Vice Chancellor, Secretary, Monash University and
Ms Maureen Postma, General Secretary, Victorian Council of Churches

Topic: “Governance of Religious Organisations ”

The Forum examined the Governance of Religious organisations and its inter-relationship with the public sector, the corporate sector and the civil society.

The sixteenth forum in the Monash Governance Forums series was led by
Prof Jacint Jordana, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona , Spain
20th August 2004
Topic: “Public Intervention and Internet Expansion”
The Forum examined the role of public intervention in the expansion of the Internet. The discussion looks at different Internet policy designs, taking into account the quality and number of particular programs promoted by regional governments, or the presence of regional planning in the different areas.

The seventeenth forum in the Monash Governance Forums series was led by

Topic: “Executive Remuneration: Governance Implications ”

The Forum stimulated discussion on the issue of Executive Remuneration, does it affect efficiency and shareholder value and what are the corporate governance implications of Executive Remuneration. Executive Remuneration has been a major issue and extensive research is carried out on the topic to analyse the effects on stakeholder value.

The eighteenth forum in the Monash Governance Forums series was led by

Mr Steve Bowman, Lifemastery Governance and Consciousness

The Forum stimulated discussion and presentation on the role of Non-Government Organisations in Governance, and its inter-relationship with the public sector, the corporate sector and other civil society bodies.
