Parliamentary Careers: Design, Delivery and Evaluation of Improved Professional DevelopmentProject DetailsProject details (155kb pdf) Research PartnersProject SummaryPrograms for members of national parliaments to provide them with information and skills to carry out their roles and responsibilities are being investigated through collaboration between Monash University, AusAID and the Inter-Parliamentary Union and involving scholars from the Monash, Sydney and South Pacific universities. Funding support is provided by an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Grant, AusAID and the Inter-Parliamentary Union. The research will include study of content, adult learning techniques applied, timing, duration and effectiveness of programs offered in a representative range of legislative chambers in parliamentary and presidential systems. Programs provided by sources such as parliamentary staff, political parties, NGOs and international agencies will be studied. It is expected that national/community benefits will arise from improved design, delivery and evaluation of professional development, thereby enhancing the central constitutional roles of parliamentarians in making laws, approving budgets and holding government policy and administration to account. This innovative cross-disciplinary project will generate new theoretical and practical understanding to assist in designing the duration, content and learning modes of parliamentarians' professional development programs. Within the overall project, particular attention will be paid to Australian assistance programs to parliaments in the Pacific which enable improved design, delivery and evaluation and more effectiveness in improving parliamentary performance, national governance and enhanced political stability in Australia's region.
