Jagjit Plahe has extensive teaching and research experience in the area of international relations, in settings which include the United Nations, the non-government sector and academia. Her experience extends from coordinating academic research projects on international trade governance, participating in international events organised around World Trade Organisation ministerial meetings and sessions of the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development, to coordinating and facilitating various short courses on trade policy.
She has published work on international governance in Third World Quarterly, Development and Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy.
Jagjit has undertaken project work for several diverse organisations, including the World Bank NGO Working Group, Action Aid based in Nairobi, Centre for Trade and Development in New Delhi, Pambazuka News based in South Africa, and the Agri-business Accountability Initiative which is a global network of civil society organisations. Jagjit is regularly invited to present papers and speeches at national and international conferences and seminars in the area of international trade governance.

The aim of the Diplomacy and Trade program is to meet the training and professional development needs of those who are engaged in the formulation of foreign trade, commercial and administrative policy advice. A further objective of the program is to ensure a solid understanding of key issues on the international political legal and economic agenda, and an appreciation of their implications for the making of foreign, commercial and trade policy in the government and non-government sectors.
Career opportunities
This program prepares people to further their careers in the diplomatic service as well as in international organisations, government departments and multinational corporations where an understanding of international relations, politics, economics and trade are essential.

The Diplomacy and Trade Program provides the opportunity to undertake formal academic study at postgraduate level across a range of disciplines directly relevant to the needs of organisations in both the public and private sector operating in a global or regional environment.
The program appeals to individuals who presently work or hope to work in the following areas:
GOVERNMENT SECTOR
Diplomatic, trade, and other departmental staff working in government and involved in the implementation and provision of policy advice in the areas of foreign affairs, trade and economic issues.
NON-GOVERNMENT SECTOR
Corporate
Individuals working in the corporate environment especially involved in international operations/management who need to have a greater understanding of the international political, economic and trade issues that potentially can affect their business environment.
Non-Government Organisations (NGOs)
Individuals who work in non-government/volunteer organisations and need to have a greater insight and understanding of the international environment and its effect on the work they seek to administer.
