Questions and answers
Important information you need to know
Here is some important information based on the most frequently asked questions about studying in the Department of Management.
Can I study part-time?
Yes you can, but remember it will take you longer to complete your course. A full-time load is normally 4 units per semester, a part-time load is normally 2 units per semester, although this can vary depending on your personal circumstances. The table illustrates how long it normally takes to complete in terms of semesters and years.

If I enrol in a 12 unit Masters, do I have to complete all 12 units
Yes, if you want a Masters degree.
I have other graduate qualifications already, can I get credit for some units?
Credit may be granted for relevant study undertaken in the last five years and must be approved by the program manager. Commencing students may be eligible if previous study is considered to be equivalent to particular units in the course of study. The maximum Credit allowable for Masters candidates is 6 units. Students articulating from graduate courses in the Department of Management will be granted Credit for the relevant units they have successfully completed.
When are units offered on-campus?
At Caulfield, most classes are conducted in evening, day, and occasionally block mode. Evening classes are from 6 to 9pm on Monday through to Friday. Block classes are normally run over 5½ days from 9am - 5pm.
What is off-campus learning?
Off-campus learning (OCL) is the answer for people who cannot attend on-campus classes. It is a flexible mode of study based on a combination of independent learning materials and learning support systems. There is no requirement to attend campus at all. In this mode of study, your unit materials are mailed to you and interaction with teaching staff and other students is by phone, fax, letter, email and on-line. The unit materials are specifically designed for independent study.
The unit material is written and coordinated by academic staff specialising in the relevant discipline. Each unit studied by off-campus learning has the same content as the equivalent on-campus unit. Access to a PC with Internet access and an up to date Windows operating environment is a requirement for off-campus students.
I see that some courses are offered both on-campus and by off-campus learning - can I choose both modes?
If you are a local student, and provided you can attend on campus classes, you can enrol in some units on-campus and others off-campus during your study. This flexibility allows you to take into consideration your work and home commitments to make the best choices for you. However, you cannot enrol in a unit on-campus and receive off-campus materials, nor can you enrol off-campus and attend on-campus classes. Some part-time students choose to study one on-campus and one off-campus unit each semester. Please note that the Master of Business Management Program is offered only by off-campus learning.
What are the fees for 2010?
For permanent Australian residents the cost per unit for the courses outlined in this Guide will be $2,563 per unit. Please note that the fees quoted are 2010 rates. For future years of your course, Monash University reserves the right to adjust annual tuition fees. However, the University undertakes that any adjustment will not exceed 6% per annum and will be applied on 1 January each year for that year.
International Students should read information for international students.
Is there financial help available for the fees?
There is information available for scholarships offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics and for the Federal Government FEE-HELP scheme.
Where can I find descriptions of the units and information
This information is published in the University Handbook.
How much time do I need to commit to each unit?
Most on-campus units have 3 hours per week class time, and students should be prepared to spend approximately 9 more hours per week on further study. Off-campus students need to spend 10 to 12 hours per week per unit. Naturally, the amount of time spent on study will vary from person to person.
Is there other important information I need to know?
When we make you an offer to commence in a course you will be provided with information about enrolment, timetables, University regulations, orientation and the full range of student services available to you.
Are there any useful tips?
Plan your progression through the course carefully, taking note of when units are offered and those units that have prerequisites i.e. prescribed units you need to study first. Refer to the University Handbook.
Make sure that in doing so you are meeting the course requirements, i.e. you will complete the core units, and the minimum 5000 level units required (refer to the relevant course pages). Remember to follow the semester and vacation dates.
