International Marketing Study Program 2001
Hong Kong "After-Hours"
Saturday 6th - Tuesday 9th January 2001

At 6am on the 6th, 42 additional feet landed and set forth on Hong Kong soil. Our first adventure began almost as soon as we landed when an "unnamed" participant sent the Hong Kong police force off in search for a "lost" passport, which was later found in her backpack. Following this the group proceeded to the Grand Tower hotel where no sooner had those feet hit their hotel rooms, that they were on their way out again to explore whatever it was that Hong Kong had to offer. The mission - by Tuesday evening, - no one piece of Hong Kong was to be left unexplored. With only one rule to follow for our entire journey - McDonald's is only to be consumed once in each country (which Michael D., Jodi, Rosie and Lisa have already broken). Edo and Mok gave crash courses on how to use the transport systems on the islands, and armed with this knowledge (and some cash thanks to the ATM's) the race was on.
Over the course of the next 4 days, some preferred to spend time in their room, discovering what exactly CAN be done in 59 seconds. The question on everyone's lips - did Luke really get a bargain with Mr. Giraffe or was he prepared to pay any price? An unfortunate illness, called 'DingDongitis', hit Lisa and Jodi. This disease affects ones' ability to keep the hand away from doorbells. We hear they now have blisters on both right index fingers.
The local culinary delights were experienced in Temple Street. Edo and Hugh led the way, and guided us through the meal choices including intestines (not sure which animal), pig's ears, thick shark fin soup (which actually was very tasty), live prawns still jumping - which you had to cook yourself in the pot provided and many more. More local customs were viewed by Edo with tea-flavoured dishwashing detergent! Some of the less adventurous (not mentioning any names - Luke, Rosie, Lisa, Terri) experienced the Spaghetti House.

Happy Birthday to Jocelyn - the party is still to come! The fantastic cable car to Ocean Park was experienced by Kriti, Doris - much to the envy of other group members! Laura, Dianne and Danielle have shopped 'til they've dropped!
Now for the nightlife. For our last night in Hong Kong the majority of the group enjoyed a Karaoke session. Hugh and Edo organised a private Karaoke room for our pleasure. After a big afternoon in Stuart and Luke's room, the boys were ready for a big night. Luke and Edo's "I Swear" was very moving, along with Janine and Michael's duet and Mok's break-dancing. "Sha la la la la (clap clap clap!) in the sunshine and "itsy bitsy teeny weenie yellow polka dot bikini" will never be the same again. But we can't forget Edo and Hugh's Cantonese serenade. Very inspiring. For most it was a reasonably early night, for others (eg Luke, Edo, Laura, Hugh and Danielle) 5am sounds more accurate.
For all those quiet ones not mentioned - look out!!! We will be watching you in the dark alleys of Manchester and London.
