International Marketing Study Program 2003
Cathay Pacific visit
6 January 2003
On our arrival at Cathay City Olivia Wong, the Cathay Pacific Marketing Manager, greeted us. We were shown to one of the airline's training and development rooms for a presentation. Olivia passionately disclosed to us an overall view of what makes Cathay Pacific a unique airline. It was fascinating to discover how Cathay recently changed their company focus from a product orientation to focus on people and service.
Following on from Olivia we had the opportunity to listen to Jesse Lui, the Marketing Communications Manager. We were all intrigued by Jesse's creativity in developing "The World's Biggest Welcome" campaign, where Cathay organised a sweepstake to revitalise the Cathay Pacific brand and stimulate the ailing Hong Kong economy.
After the presentations we were invited on a tour of Cathay City. Our tour guide was Olivia Kwan, the Public Relations Manager. Being great at PR, Olivia promptly had us all booked for lunch in their exclusive Cathay Restaurant on the top floor of the staff hotel. The visit around the headquarters enabled us to gain a sense of the working environment at Cathay Pacific. In addition, Olivia's charisma and humour made us feel very comfortable. First, we were shown the old mock airline cabin, then we moved to the latest business class seats where everyone had a chance to enjoy their luxurious functions. From there it was into the emergency training area but fortunately there was no sliding on the escape slide. The next stop was the pilot training centre where we saw one of the $US10 million pilot training simulators. Olivia opened our eyes to the benefits of being a Cathay employee by showing us the gym, badminton, squash and library facilities. The hunger then kicked in so Olivia kindly directed us to the restaurant. We were well looked after and given a magnificent lunch. To much surprise Olivia returned to present us all with a Cathay calendar as a gift, something that will be handy for all of us.
Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and it was a great start to our learning experience.
