International Marketing Study Program 2004

New York City and Krispy Kreme Experience

January 2004

For those of us who managed our money and suitcase space throughout the first part of the tour, many of us struggled to do so as we made our way across America.

Our first destination was the Big Apple. In Paris we had heard of New York's freezing temperatures and we were in no way disappointed! At no other point during the trip were we so thankful for our thermals!

We were fortunate to have 5 nights in New York which meant we had plenty of time to explore. Highlights were:

  • Sightseeing - including the Empire State Building, Central Park and the Statue of Liberty
  • Shopping - it didn't take long for some of us to discover Century 21 stores that stocked quality brands at low prices.
  • Broadway - many of us took advantage of half price tickets for shows on broadway. “Boy from Oz” was a group favourite and it was rumoured that at least one of our group members was more interested in the lead man Hugh Jackman than the theatrical quality of the production!

Our second destination in America was Portland, Oregon. Portland was a slower pace and provided quite a contrast to New York. We were delighted with the hotel's spacious rooms, gym and hearty breakfasts. While we were only in town for a short period of time, many of us managed to make a significant contribution to the monthly sales figures of Portland's Niketown store!

After a short bus trip, we arrived in our third and final destination, beautiful Seattle in the State of Washington. True to its reputation, Seattle provided us with our first real experience of rain. Seattle is a relatively compact and quaint city. Particular highlights included a visit to Starbucks' original store, the Experience Music Project centre (Seattle's tribute to popular American music) and the public market centre including the Pike's Place fish market which is famous for its modern team management principles. We had our final dinner together in downtown Seattle where we thanked our fearless leaders who continually amazed us with their patience and their ability to escort 20 of us safely across 4 countries within 4 weeks. To their credit, not one of us was lost in transit!

While many of us were keen to head home to our loved ones and to unpack our bulging suitcases, there was some sadness as we farewelled each other. Given the length of the trip and the amazing experiences we have shared, there are many friendships that have been formed that are likely to continue beyond the tour's end date. There is a strong sense of appreciation for all those who have made the tour such a success and for many of our loved ones who have allowed the time, funds and/or space for us enjoy our latest adventure.
