International Marketing Study Program 2004

Nike

26 January 2004

WOW!! There is really no better way to describe our arrival at the overwhelmingly impressive Nike Campus. Not only overwhelming in size - this place was seriously massive - but the architecture of the buildings and the stunning surrounds far surpassed our expectations.

We were greeted in the John McEnroe building by Amy Crews, who organised our visit. Who better to deliver our first official presentation of the day but Nelson Farris a senior member of the communications team, and 30-year veteran Nike employee. Nelson spoke with us about the evolution of Nike and the Nike brand, which gave us insight through his valuable experience. The passion for Nike that Nelson exuded reflected the passion that bought Nike to where it is today. The major points we derived from Nelson's presentation regarded the Nike brand and what it represented - passion for sports, performance and innovation. Also portrayed was the respect and pride those at Nike have for the co-founders of the company, Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman. This was epitomised by the one of the Nike maxims, “remember the man”.

None of us were prepared for what came next - Kevin Carroll. Kevin is known as the “Nike Katalyst and Master Storyteller”, and whilst we are still not entirely sure what his role entails on a day to day basis, we know that he does an exceptional job. Kevin, through his stories, managed to inspire and motivate our group, proving that his ability to do the same to those at Nike is outstanding. Similarly to Nelson, Kevin was a true reflection of Nike's corporate values, demonstrating the importance Nike places on its employees. One of the most important points that Kevin wanted to convey was where your dreams may take you and to keep chasing them. We were so lucky to receive the exclusive “dream” ID bands to wear as a reminder of what we are chasing. They will certainly be a reminder of Kevin's amazing words. After Kevin's presentation, we briefly explored the library, again reflecting the importance Nike places on its employees, providing them with a wide range of resources.
