International Marketing Study Program 2004

Sony

5 January 2004

Do you dream in Sony?

Sony was our first company visit for our study program. Despite a professional but perhaps understated entrance foyer, it was the extraordinary showroom on level 2 that captured our attention. Divided into 2 groups, one group went to the showroom and the other went to the demonstration rooms. The showroom displayed the latest Sony products such as digital cameras, televisions, notebooks and mobile phones. The products were technologically very advanced compared with the products in the market. The technology amazed us that it was actually beyond our imagination. The notebook was even thinner than our study journal!

Then, using advanced photographic equipment, Sony staff gave us an opportunity to pose for picture s with different backgrounds such Japanese scenery, or people in costume. We also had the chance to view the differences between video film recording techniques for television.

We moved to the demonstration rooms where one of the demonstrators showed us the dog robots. The robots have different characteristics and looks depend on what the owners wish. These products were invented to substitute for a real dog as a pet. They have a memory stick inside them and they can respond to recorded sounds and memory cards. They are now available in Japanese market.

Not enough to have created a dog robot, Sony have also invented a child robot that acts as a symbol of the advancements at Sony. It danced, greeted, it bowed down when the demonstrator told it to do so.

We received a most informative presentation from Mr Gerald Cavanagh, Director of Corporate PR. His presentation provided information about Sony's market breadth around the world, their approach to new developments, strategies for dealing with competitive threats and general insights in to the brand that is Sony. He then very openly and informatively answered all our questions. The time flew so fast, it was already an hour and the session finished.

It was a very productive visit and an excellent start to our world study program. Thankyou so much to all concerned at Sony.
