International Marketing Study Program 2005

Hong Kong

8th January 2005

After a long flight, which left Melbourne at midnight, we arrived at Hong Kong at 6 am. Obviously the team was not as rested as most of us would have liked, however the thought of markets and the scent of a good bargain was enough to drive us out into the streets regardless. In our first day in Hong Kong, sleep took a distant second to shopping.

The group met at the hotel lobby and gallantly attempted to stick together... however five minutes after setting off we were one down and Ian had to lead a single man recovery mission in search of Tehya who was now wandering the streets of Hong Kong solo. The rest of the group continued on to a temple where the locals offer gifts to higher powers. It was a bustling place which seemed to single handedly support the incense market. Many of the group got involved with the proceedings and had their fortunes told. Ian and Tehya turned up.

After the temple it was time to hit the markets. Many went their own way and by the time we all met for a few drinks in the hotel bar that night there were many stories to share. This first night proved pretty mellow for most of the crew, as most hadn't slept much in the last couple of days, however there was a small renegade group, which hit the local bar for some happy hour cocktails.

The second day was filled with more shopping and sightseeing, but after some needed rest the night before the energy levels were still high by the time we all met in the lobby that night for our party tram ride around the city. Julia's local brother Edo had organised a dinner party on the old hk Island tram. I don't think Hong Kong has a better party experience and a great time was had by all ! The alcohol flowed freely and the group was in fine form. By the time we got to the Karaoke bar later that night there was enough Dutch courage that the microphones did not get a rest.

After a couple of days of bonding and partying, the trip will took on a new flavour as the first company visit to AC Neilson went ahead. A stimulating experience was had as was the visit to NBA Asia where we were also warmly accepted. Whilst it is only early days of this Study Program the group is shaping up really well and it appears that the coming weeks will provide both academic and social rewards better than any of us could have hoped for.
