International Marketing Study Program 2005

Paris Social Report

January 2005

Paris is not only the city of Romance , but also the city of excitement. After all those lovely British accents from London where we know what to say, we suddenly had to be prepared to say ‘Bonjour' and ‘Merci' while spending out time in Paris. We had a delayed flight from London still we were all happy for the $5 pounds compensation from British Airways. It was close to dinner time after our arrival in Paris and fortunately there was a fine French restaurant across the road from our hotel where we all gathered together having a meal of snails and other French delicacies and of course some French wine.

As our hotel was so close to the train station, we were able to visit many of Paris ' attractions. For those who are more adventurous, they took a long train trip to Versaille---the Napoleon Palace . While visiting the palace, you can feel the distinct history of Napoleon's life. For the shopping lovers, they went to the famous Galleries Lafayette and claimed to observe the marketing strategy of a large shopping complex in Paris . However, the majority simply chose to go to the Tour Eiffel to see its extravagant lighting in the evening time.

One of the visits in Paris was the Publicis Group. It was located in Champs-Elysees which is recognised as the most beautiful street in Paris . Most luxury brands can be found in this area. The most impressive outdoor design/advertisement on the Champs-Elysees was that by Louis Vuitton with their building looking more like a gigantic LV suitcase than a retail outlet.

On the lighter side of life the group also used the opportunity to party it up in the city of love. With former Monash University Marketing lecture Tim Lyons providing the strategic direction required we found our way to bar called Latina where we happened to meet members of the L'Oreal entourage who had presented to us earlier in the week. Whilst we salsaed, boogied and had a great time late into the night, not all members of the team were able to keep up with the pace of Tim and certain tour leaders. Whilst some team members retired to the hotel in style Tim and a few of the crew choose to move on to one of Europe 's many super clubs called ‘la duplex'. There they danced the night away and had the time of their life but paid the price the next day on train to the Netherlands . Be sure to check the web site photo's as a picture paints a thousand words.

Many students also took the opportunity to visit the world famous Moulin Rouge, an invigorating story of love, greed, passion and can can girls. At the theatre they watched the presentations sipping French Champaign and guzzling glasses of gorgeous Beaudoux while wonderful women kicked their legs into the air demonstrating wonderful athleticism and excellent choreography. An excellent evening was had.

After we had ‘enough' shopping and sightseeing in Paris , we took a 4-hour train ride to Holland and our next city Amsterdam.
