International Marketing Study Program 2007
Dubai
10th - 12th January 2007
Dubai was an amazing city - the sheer wealth of the city was mind blowing - so much opulence and vision in a city like this is truly an unforgettable experience. Everywhere we looked there was some form of construction underway - buildings, islands, hotels, you name it! This is so much so that around one third of the world’s cranes are currently operating in Dubai!
During our first day in Dubai, we participated in a pedestrian rally, which was similar to the Amazing race in that we raced through the streets and popular sights taking photos of particular landmarks. These included the Dubai museum, Gold souk, spice markets, heritage market and Sheik al Saeed’s village. Although it is still unclear which team won (few have claimed first place!), it was the ideal way to get a feel for the history of the city.
The following day, a large group of us went on the Big bus tour, showing us all the sights of the city. The highlights of the tour included the many mosques, the Burj Al Arab hotel (the worlds only seven star hotel!), the beaches and the massive shopping malls (one of which houses a 400 metre long ski slope!). The same afternoon we headed to General Motors for our company visit.
After the visit, many of the students headed to the Emirates Mall - home to hundreds of shops! Shopping here was a must whilst others went to Ski Dubai which was the ski run inside the mall! This was a great experience and even more so considering we were in the middle of the desert!
Four wheel driving in the dunes on our last night in Dubai was the highlight! We were picked up at our hotel and headed off into the desert in 4 wheel drives – the experience was comparable to a thrill ride at a theme park. After a while we stopped and sand-boarded down the dunes – this was full of laughs as there was a range of techniques used and many of us fell as we reached the bottom! The evening finished off with a traditional Middle Eastern dinner in the desert under the stars and belly-dancing which included our own Kark Lombardozzi as a feature of the act.
