Pre-Departure Learning Days

MIMSP 2009 Learning Day 2

During the second MIMSP learning day, students were able to complete and describe their company summaries and finalise group research projects. The company summaries included the background, positioning, strategy and key aspects of each company we will be visiting, which enabled all students to grasp a generalised image of the business side of the MIMSP.

Dr Colin Jevons, Department of Marketing

Dr Colin Jevons (Senior Lecturer, Department of Marketing), our guest lecturer for the day, spoke about the global branding and cultural issues in international marketing, where branding can be defined as the “distinctive entity that differentiates a relevant, enduring and credible promise of value associated with a product and indicates the source of that promise”. Other key elements discussed by Colin were that international branding allows a diversification of risk and economies of scale; however marketers must be wary when undertaking global strategies and choose between standardised or customised approaches to deal with differing consumption patterns and cultural values. Overall, the differences and similarities between nations must be understood in order for international marketing programs to succeed.

Alana Jones (MIMSP 2007 participant),
Hermia Lee (MIMSP 2008 participant)

Other guest speakers of the day included Karsten Horne and Jo Walsh from Reho travel and past MIMSP students Alana Jones and Hermia Lee who explained the do’s and don’ts of traveling on the MIMSP, and most importantly (especially for the girls!), what to pack as lightly as possible. These items included warm clothing, a three piece suit, a wide range of medicine and vitamins, security locks for baggage, airplane carry on luggage considerations and currency.

Highlights of the day were the group photo’s (which became a laugh for all involved!) and the wine distribution which really brought the program to life.

Overall the day was enjoyable and informative for all!
