Governance research unit has eye on the media

The profound effects that communications media can have on governance in the public, private and government spheres is the focus of a new research program recently launched by the Monash Governance Research Unit.

The project will be advised by a panel of Australian leaders in the print, audio and visual media including Mark Armstrong (former ABC Chairman), Patricia Edgar (children's film and TV producer; former member of the Australian Broadcasting Tribunal), (Greg Hywood (former Editor in Chief and Publisher of The Age and Australian Financial Review), and Terry Laidler (communications consultant, former broadcaster).

A PhD scholarship is offered for the first project, which will investigate the effects on governance of the changing roles, relationships and regulation of electronic media (radio, TV and Internet). In particular, the research is expected to look at media roles in the formation of ideas, culture and corporate governance,

Additional research projects, journal articles and a book are also planned. For further information, contact Dr Ken Coghill on 9903 1532 or ken.coghill@buseco.monash.edu.au.
