Australasian Marketing Academy Salutes Harmen Oppewal

The Australian and New Zealand Marketing Academy (ANZMAC) has named Professor Harmen Oppewal from the Department of Marketing as a 2008 Distinguished Researcher of the Year.

ANZMAC Vice President and Awards Committee Chair, Professor Janet Hoek, noted that the Distinguished Researcher Award was ANZMAC’s premier research accolade, designed to recognise sustained excellence in marketing research.  “Professor Oppewal has an outstanding international reputation and it is entirely fitting that ANZMAC celebrate his many contributions, particularly his work modelling decision processes in complex environments.”

Internationally recognised for its academic rigour, Professor Oppewal’s work also has a strong applied orientation and has been published in leading journals in several fields.  His PhD research stimulated several highly productive research streams and his work is exceptional for having crossed traditional disciplinary boundaries.

Since Professor Oppewal was appointed to his position at Monash, he has supervised and inspired many postgraduate students, published with many of them and provided extensive support to the ANZMAC doctoral colloquium.   His work has resulted in numerous collaborations and attracted substantial research grants, and his expertise is as widely sought after by his colleagues as it is by his many post-graduate students.

"Harmen's work is all the more outstanding for its inter-disciplinary contributions," said ANZMAC President Professor Mark Gabbott.  “His findings have had a profound influence on marketing thinking and practice and, as a research-led community of scholars, ANZMAC applauds his many achievements."
