VC Teaching Award for Accounting and Finance staff
Madhu Veraraghavan, Kevin Tant and Damian Barry from the Department of Accounting and Finance have been awarded the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence for their influence on student learning and student engagement through their involvement in the development of the Treasury Dealing Room.
Their application “The treasury dealing room; technology, innovation, engagement and internationalisation in finance education” highlighted the importance of collaborative teamwork between academics and general staff to enable positive teaching outcomes.
During the development and relocation of the Treasury Dealing Room Kevin Tant continued his responsibilities in teaching, curriculum development and software testing. Madhu Veeraraghavan focused on teaching support and implementation of units to be taught. Damian Barry managed the legal requirements for software licensing, human resources, purchasing, installation of audio visual resources and the linkage of timelines for the project.
The Treasury Dealing Room is a perfect example of technology, innovation, engagement and internationalisation in finance education. It has a computer-based system, which replicates Australia's financial institutions, using software developed by staff from the Department of Accounting and Finance and Faculty of Information Technology.
It provides students with the opportunity to apply theoretical finance concepts learned in the classroom by "hands on" application. In essence, it creates a rigorous market atmosphere in the university classroom.
