Student accolades
Several outstanding achievements by students were acknowledged during recent graduation ceremonies in the faculty. One such achievement was the awarding of the 2008 Mollie Holman Doctoral Medal for the most outstanding theses submitted by a Monash University PhD student.
The Mollie Holman Doctoral Medal was awarded to Dr Helene de Burgh-Woodman from the Department of Marketing for her innovative and unusual work in the marketing discipline for her thesis, titled Sailing through Subculture: understanding the historical and cultural influences on the discursive cohesion and consumption practices of the sailing subculture.
Her thesis paves the way for an exploration of the implications of subcultures for marketing and consumer research. Dr Helene de Burgh-Woodman was supervised by Dr Jan Brace-Govan and she has already published five refereed journal articles from her thesis.
The Mollie Holman Medal for Excellence takes its name from Emeritus Professor Mollie Holman, who held a personal chair as professor of physiology at Monash from 1970 until her retirement in 1996.
