Faculty to act on global warming
In an attempt to reduce our emissions and contribution to global warming, Monash University has committed to reduce energy consumption by 20% by 2010. We have been targeted as a top 250 Australian energy user, so we have an obligation to act. During Monash Earth Hour we achieved an average energy reduction of 23% and would now like to invite you to take part in 'Monash Energy Challenge - Off-Peak Power’.
The 'Monash Energy Challenge - Off-Peak Power' program will focus on reducing the university’s after-hours electricity usage. Off-peak electricity consumption is currently at least 30% - and in some areas up to 50% - of the university’s total electricity use.
This is due mostly to computers, lighting, office equipment and air-handling, air
conditioning and heating operating overnight and on weekends. The campaign hopes to
encourage long-term behaviour change to make the university’s excessive off-peak
electricity consumption a thing of the past.
Over the month of July we are asking staff to take small and simple steps that will make an
incredible difference.
• Switch off computers, lights and office equipment (such as photocopiers, faxes, printers,
kettles, coffee machines)
• Ensure that the last person to leave, switches off air conditioning / heating where
possible
• Ensure that any laboratory equipment such as ovens and heating elements is
switched off.
Let’s make BusEco the most environmentally responsible faculty by reducing our
environmental impacts, both at work and home, and enjoy the benefits of improving
environmental performance.
