Seminar on modern world of workA seminar presented by the Department of Management to discuss two publications about the modern world of work involving independent contractors or professionals will be held at Clayton. The Forgotten Workforce: written by Dr Tui McKeown is a joint project by the faculty's Social and Economic Interface Research Network (SEIRnet), Entity Solutions and Independent Contractors of Australia. Independence and the Death of Employment by Ken Phillips will also be discussed. Currently representing around 20 per cent of Australia's workforce, this significant sector of the workforce is not well understood. Indeed, virtually no research has been conducted either about them or the organisations that engage them. These two publications provide important steps towards developing a much-needed understanding of this important group. The discussion panel brings together perspectives from politics, business, academia and independent contractors. Date: 16 October 2008
