Business Internship introduced for Berwick and Peninsula studentsA new Business Internship for third year students in the faculty at Berwick and Peninsula campuses will commence in early 2009. The internship will give students the opportunity to experience life in the workforce and apply their theoretical knowledge. "On enrolment in BEW3101 the student will advise the faculty of the business area in which they want the internship. However, to deliver maximum benefit to both the student and the business, the principal determinant of the type of internship to be offered will be the major or majors being undertaken or completed by the student." Vanita Amin, Community Projects Officer explained. The internship may prove to be the beginning of a long-term employment relationship with the business providing the internship. Businesses gain the benefit of a student who has up-to-date knowledge in the area in which the business operates and is eager to apply the knowledge for the benefit of the business. The internship will be for a minimum of 20 working days. This can be continuous or intermittent. The business is under no obligation to provide remuneration to the student. The University carries insurance for students on work placement but this does not extend to students who are categorised as an employee. However internship businesses may offer to cover the students expenses with a nominal gratuity.
