Faculty welcomes new Associate Dean (Graduate Studies)

Professor Gary Magee has joined the faculty as a Professor of Economics and Associate Dean (Graduate Studies).

Professor Magee is Australia’s leading economic historian and an exceptional international scholar. His international reputation is exemplified by his numerous academic awards and fellowships, including his election as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Professor Magee has served as the Head of School of Economics and Finance at La Trobe University for the past four years.

He completed his undergraduate studies at Monash University in 1986 and then obtained a first-class honours degree in economics at La Trobe University in 1990.

At La Trobe University Professor Magee was a D. M. Myer university medalist. In 1991, he went to the University of Oxford as a Commonwealth Scholar and obtained his doctorate from Nuffield College, Oxford, in 1995.

Professor Magee has also held academic positions at the Australian National University, the University of Melbourne, La Trobe University and the University of London. He has held visiting fellowships at the University of Oxford, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the China Development Institute, the University of Leeds, and the Center for the History of American Business, Technology and Society in Delaware, USA.

In 2001, Professor Magee was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in the UK in recognition of his work in economic history and in 2005, he held an Australian Bicentennial Fellowship from the Menzies Research Centre at the University of London.

He has published widely in the fields of technological change, economic history and industrial development.

As Associate Dean (Graduate Studies), Professor Magee will be Chair of the Graduate Studies Committee and he will also be a member of the Graduate Review.
